A suspicious vehicle was reported at the time and they were detected by the police using Automatic Number Plate Recognition. The persons arrested come from the Bristol and Middlesex areas. This shows the importance of reporting suspicious vehicles to the police. F343 190308 Sightings of a vehicle required registration number to follow. Sightings of the following vehicle are required which has been seen in suspicious circumstances throughout this district and the South West. White MAZDA PICK UP TRUCK index number K220 EWC. Please report any sightings to the Police on 0845 456 7000 or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. If this vehicle is seen in suspicious circumstances use the 999 system. Please quote Ringmaster message F343 and ask for the call to be tagged NHW F341 130308 There have been a number of thefts from sheds in the Pen Selwood area recently. With Spring approaching this is the traditional time for this type of crime to escalate particularly in the rural areas. Please remind your members to check the security of their sheds and outbuildings and to be extra vigilant regarding suspicious activity. Please ask them to report all suspicious activity and vehicles immediately to the police using the 999 system if necessary. Often this type of crime is preceded by some form of cold calling therefore it is also important that all suspicious cold callers are reported to the police. F339 180208 There have been reports from the Shepton Mallet area which could equally affect your area of black plastic bags being taken from wheelie bins. This may allow an opportunity for identity theft therefore it may well be pertinent to remind members to shred or otherwise destroy any items containing their personal details before discarding them in the rubbish bins. F338 180208 There have been a number of reports of cold callers to the door selling paintings and other items. From reports received it would appear that what is offered as original paintings and prints are in fact copies. The callers appear to be from Poland and on occasions purport to be both deaf and dumb. Many of these callers will imply that they are out of work or working on behalf of a charity. Please remember the previously given advice that any cold calling at the door presents an opportunity for a crime to be committed. The advice from the Police is to deal only with known persons at the door and never let any uninvited cold callers into your home. If you do decide to purchase items from cold callers then use the same criteria to determine the validity and quality of the item as you would from a street trader and always close your door while you go back inside your property to collect any money. It is important that all suspicious cold calling is reported to the police using the 0845 456 7000 number and use the 999 system if the caller becomes abusive or refuses to leave. It is also worth remembering that deception can occur when a cold caller engages someone at the front door in conversation and an accomplice will enter via an insecure rear door. If you have information about any crime, phone the police on 0845 456 7000 or you can call anonymously to CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111 F336 150108 Some of you may have seen a recent booklet which was included in various free newspapers entitled SAFER STRONGER NEIGHBOURHOODS-"Introducing your team" which gives information on your local Neighbourhood Policing Teams plus useful contact numbers. For those that have seen it and indeed for those that haven't there are additional copies available. If you would like extra copies please contact 0845 456 7000 and ask to be put through to your local Police Community Support Officer based at either Crewkerne, Somerton, Wells or Yeovil to arrange collection. F335 181207 I would like to thank you and your members for the involvement towards NHW and the support given to myself and to your local beat policing teams during the last year.....Please be aware once again of the extra valuables in the form of presents you will have at this time of year Please follow the usual advice of keeping presents out of sight of passers by both in the home and particularly when out shopping in your car... To have somebody enter your home and commit a burglary is traumatic enough...About this time of the year a few years ago I visited a property with a scene of crime officer where the intruder had ripped open all the Christmas presents before taking only those he/she wanted and leaving the others scattered and broken around the house. The distress of the occupants will remain with me for a long time. Although it will always be difficult to beat the determined intruder, most of our crime is opportunist and by following basic crime reduction advice and being aware of the potential for a criminal act to take place we should all be able to reduce the opportunity for crime. Lets make it difficult for those who live on the fringe of society and prey on the vulnerable to enjoy Christmas at our expense!!.... Have a safe, enjoyable and crime free Christmas - and a neighbourly New Year. F333 061207 There have been a number of thefts of heating oil from domestic tanks throughout the Chard Crewkerne Somerton and Wincanton policing areas. F325 241007 This is being sent to all e-mail recipients-----please pass on to you members/family/friends Chain letter Description The following chain letter has been distributed widely. The chain letter contains factual inaccuracies as a £15 telephone tariff does not exist.According to ICSTIS (The Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services), the chain letter does have some basis in fact however. A scam was operating in late 2005 which encouraged the public to dial a premium rate number that would charge them at £1.50 per minute. However, those numbers were closed down on 29 December 2005. Of course, it is possible that other scammers could set up different premium rate numbers and attempt a similar fraud. Anyone who receives a suspicious communication is advised to contact ICSTIS.The text of the chain letter reads as follows:Please pass on...Royal mail postal scamThis scam has been confirmed by our Royal Mail account manager and is especially relevant as Christmas is fast approaching:A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number). DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize. If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call. If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 0207 2396655 or ICSTIS (the premium rate service regulator) at www.icstis.org.uk, or your local trading standards office. F322 181007 Request for information regarding cold callers - as you are probably aware there have been a number of distraction type burglaries throughout this policing district and burglaries to properties where the owners are away on holiday. It is believed that in many of these cases there has been some cold calling at properties some days prior to the crime being committed. To assist the police with their intelligence gathering they would like to know if there has been any suspicious cold calling by unknown persons in your area during the last two or three weeks. If you have had such a call please call using the 0845 456 7000 number giving dates and times if possible or if you have any information on cold callers use Crimestoppers on 0800 555111... In both instances please state that the information is required by NHW administration at Yeovil and quote Ringmaster message F322 F310 070807 The Police wish me to inform you that there have been recent burglaries within the Wincanton Policing area to properties that are unoccupied due either to holidays or the resident being in hospital etc. Please remind your members to continue being good neighbours and be aware of any property where the residents are currently away by continuing to remove any newspapers. post, milk bottles or other signs that the property is unoccupied. Dear All, As you may know Crimestoppers provides a means for people to give anonymous information about crime. It is a separately funded charity supporting the work of the police. To help them find out what you think of the Crimestoppers' website they are running a brief online survey and have asked me to invite you to participate. It takes only five minutes and at the end you can enter a prize draw to win £100 in shopping vouchers. Whilst looking at the site you might learn a bit more about the charity, how they maintain the anonymity of callers, the reward system and what happens to the information people provide. Just go to www.crimestoppers-uk.org for your chance to win. Thank you. Harriette Dottridge Neighbourhood Watch Development Officer Avon and Somerset Police HQ Portishead F305 020707 The Police would like me to issue yet another warning regarding the distraction type burglaries that are still occurring within this District. Could you please once again contact your elderly or vulnerable members and attempt to ensure that they do not open their doors to any cold callers no matter what urgency there appears to be. If possible they should contact either yourself, a neighbour or family member to assist with identifying the caller before opening the door. All suspicious callers must be reported immediately to the Police and if necessary use the 999 system. .... If you or your members have retained a copy of a leaflet that was being distributed in your area regarding shotblasting, garden maintainence and DIY SOS would you please send it to PS Phil Jones at Yeovil Police station. Horsey Lane Yeovil BA20 1SN or hand it in to your local Police station in an envelope marked for the attention of PS Jones at Yeovil. If you have any information please reply to the email address of the sender above. Persons cold calling to offer 'services' should be reported to Crimestoppers (0800555111) lest they be acting as scouts for distraction burglars. As much detail as possible should be reported; characteristics of individuals, the makes, colour and registration numbers of their vehicles are most important. These reports help to build a picture of the activity which in turn increases the chance of conviction. Actual crime should of course be reported using 999. F304 280607 There has been a recent increase throughout this Policing district of tools being stolen from vansovernight. If you have any members who may be affected by this type of crime please remind them to review their security and to park in open well lit areas overnight if able to do so. If it is possible all tools should be removed from vans overnight and if not possible then parking with the rear doors adjacent to a wall may assist in preventing unwanted entry. Please report any suspicious activity immediately to the police. Further to Ringmaster message F301 this person was arrested at Vobster and it would appear that there were at least two reported sightings by NHW members and probably more so i will be sending out a new message indicating this. The result remains the same in that due to members involvement this elusive person is now back where he cannot commit more crime. Follow up to Ringmaster message F293 broadcast on 7th June requesting sightings of a white male riding a blue Suzuki motorcycle Index number WP 55 DDF member in the Westhay area of Glastonbury who reported a sighting via the 999 system this male spent a couple of days at Yeovil Police station and is now receiving full board courtesy of Her Majesty's prison service. F291 240507 This is another warning about rogue traders on our District. The police would like further information on persons cold calling under the name of Distinctive Driveways offering tarmacing etc and charging high prices for poor quality work. This company is also under investigation by Trading Standards If you are called on by this company please contact the police immediately on 0845 456 7000 with information regarding vehicles and descriptions of persons. Please state that this information is required by Detective Sergeant Phil Jones of the Somerset East District Targeting Team, based at Yeovil police station and quote Ringmaster reference F291. If you receive intimidation by any cold callers then you should contact the police immediately using the 999 system if necessary. F289 170507 There are reports of persons receiving a phone call from representatives of a company calling themselves E.T. Security. They are currently phoning and arranging meetings with predominately the elderly in the Yeovil and surrounding areas but could well move on to your area in the future. They are stating that they are working for or in onjunction with the Fire Brigade and are offering surveys for fire safety and security devises in the home. The intention is to arrange a meeting mainly with the elderly and vulnerable in their homes and then hard sell their products. This company is not working with the Fire Brigade and calls should be treated with caution. Residents who have suffered any damage to properties and gardens may be looking for trades people to carry out repairs. However, when urgent work needs doing it is tempting to accept the first offer that comes along. It is usually best to employ a tradesman that you know, or who has been recommended by a friend or neighbour. Make sure you know who you are dealing with, how to contact them if you are not happy, and don't pay in advance for work to be done. Please be extra vigilant to doorstep callers and sellers who may not be offering bona fide work. Remember, do not buy from the door. Speak to a family member or close friend before agreeing to any work being done, or signing a contract. F266 150107 Following thefts of jewellery from recent burglaries the Crime Reduction Department would like you to remind your members that one way of identifying property should they be unfortunate enough to have it stolen is to photograph items of jewellery and antiques etc. Ensuring that a ruler or an object that will indicate the size of the item is included in the photograph will greatly assist in describing the object. If you wish further advice on this or any other means of property marking please phone 0845 456 7000 and ask to speak to your local Crime reduction Officer…………………. Be aware of new car-jacking scheme. You walk across the car park, unlock your car and get inside. Then you lock all your doors, start the engine and shift or put into reverse. You look into the rear-view mirror to back out of your parking space and you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you shift the gear stick back into park or neutral, unlock your doors and jump out of your car to remove that paper or whatever it is that is obstructing your view. When you reach the back of your car that is when the car-jackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off!! Your engine was running, you would have left your purse in the car and they practically mow you down as they speed off in your car. BE AWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED IN GLASGOW AND MANCHESTER AND IS MAKING ITS WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY Just drive away and remove the paper later! It is stuck to your window and be thankful that you read this email. I hope you will forward this to friends and family especially to women! A purse contains all identification, and you certainly do NOT want someone getting your home address. They already HAVE your keys!!! JUST BE AWARE AND TAKE CARE IT WILL PROBABLY SOON ARRIVE IN YOUR AREA F263 191206 Dec 06 I would like to wish you, your members and your families a Merry Christmas and a happy and crime free New Year. Please remain vigilant over the festive season as there are those among us who live on the fringe of society and who do not share the same values and principles of life which we in NHW value so highly. Please be extra careful that all the additional items of presents, food and drink in your home are not on show to those who have no conscience about relieving you of them. Please also take care to flatten and disguise any empty boxes and packaging that are put outside with the refuse in order not to advertise the new items that you have within your home. I would like to thank you and your members for the continued support of NHW and I know that there is a lot of effort being put in by NHW co-ordinators and members throughout this district which is assisting in not only reducing crime but is also having an important effect on reducing the fear of crime among the elderly and the vulnerable. Scam Some people are receiving cards in the post, or answer phone messages or even text messages, implying that they have a package to collect and a premium rate number is given for them to arrange collection/delivery. The scam is likely to increase with Christmas present deliveries. The company name can vary. Premium rate numbers begin with 09 or 091 and have 11 digits. If the call back number starts with these then the person should contact ICSTIS on 0800 500 212 who are the premium rate services regulator to check the name of the company using the number. If it is any other number: 08 etc they should contact Postwatch on 08456 013265 to check whether the company is a Postcom registered operator (this is a local rate number). If it proves that the company is not registered, or is using a premium rate line, then the person should call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 and give details of the complaint. Consumer Direct will pass on details to the local Trading Standards office and also keep a log of the incidents across the area which will help in any investigations. ICSTIS regulates any service/promotion that is operating on one of the following number ranges: numbers beginning with 090 or 091 directory enquiry (DQ) services operating on numbers beginning with 118 reverse-billed SMS (you are charged for the receipt of messages) containing content operating on shortcodes. The caller said they were from the Water Company and that the residents water supplies were being cut off now and this would last for two days. The caller advised the resident to go out and purchase enough water to cover this period. Fortunately the resident checked with Wessex Water who confirmed that there were no problems in her area. This is an unusual attempt at a possible Distraction burglary and may well be a one off but it would be pertinent to remind members of the need to be aware of unsolicited telephone calls and callers to the door. 5/7/06 Neighbourhood Watch VEHICLE SIGHTINGS Please be on the look out for the following vehicle The following vehicle has been seen in suspicious circumstances following Distraction Burglaries. Number one...there is still an ongoing problem on our Policing District of distraction type burglaries. It is extremely important that all suspicious callers are reported immediately to the police and that door chains where fitted are used and identity of unknown callers is asked for and checked Message two… often when police recover suspected stolen property they have no idea who the rightful owner is. One way Neighbourhood Watch Members can assist is to ensure that property is marked preferably with a postcode and a house number or name. There are a number of ways in which property can be marked. Further advice can be obtained by telephoning 0845 456 7000 and asking to speak to your local Crime Reduction Officer. |
